How To Automatically BCC Gmail Emails in Chrome
Posted by Tim Bourquin Comments (36)
UPDATE: New 3.0 version now works with new Gmail Compose Window
Auto BCC Gmail for Chrome 3.0 is here. Automatically BCC different emails for different “from” accounts – even in the new Compose window. With this one you have to click “Compose” after installation for the extension to grab all your “from” accounts first. I’ll be doing a video soon to explain, but directions below.
I have been looking for a solution to automatically BCC any outgoing email or reply in Gmail within the Chrome browser (PC or Mac) and Mac Safari. So I had a developer build a Chrome and Safari extension for me that automatically adds an email address to the BCC field in Gmail specifically when you are using it in Mac Safari or Chrome on either a PC or Mac (the Chrome extension works on both).
Being the capitalist entrepreneur I am, this goes against everything I believe in, but I’m giving it away for free (for now). No promises I won’t charge for it in the future.
The link to download it is below, but before you do, you need to know about a few of its limitations:
1. This extension only works in the Chrome browser (both Windows/Mac)
2. The extension runs locally on your computer so it won’t be active when you login to Gmail on your mobile phone or tablet.
- Download Gmail Auto BCC for Chrome 3.0
(right click and “Save As” or “Save Link As”)
To set the BCC Gmail in Chrome on PC or Mac:
- find where you saved the Chrome extension
- go into Chrome > Preferences > Extensions
- drag the extension from Windows Explorer or Documents into that page
- Refresh Gmail
- Click “Compose” once to tell the extension to grab all “from” accounts
- Discard that compose
- Go to Chrome Settings > Extensions
- find the autoBCC extension and click on “Options”
- enter email to BCC automatically for each “from” account
- click “Save”
- refresh Gmail page (important)
- drink some Orangina while BCC’ing awesomely
v3.0
- updated to work with the new Gmail Compose window
v2.0
- add a different BCC email for each of your Gmail “from” accounts
- fixed bug whereby a “+” sign in the BCC email was rejected
v1.0.4 (Download v1.0.4 version if 2.0 doesn’t work for you)
- fixed character limit in set email for BCC
v1.0.3
- now also works in vertical or horizontal split view
Mac Safari users: Here’s is an extension that works for Mac Safari but it has limited functionality. Basically you can only BCC one email for all your “from” addresses. We won’t be updating this extension any further:
- Download the Auto BCC Gmail Mac Safari extension (v.1.0.4)
(right click and “Save As” or “Save Link As”)
To install and set the BCC Gmail in Safari:
- find where you saved the safari extension and double click on it to install it
- go into Safari > Preferences > Extensions
- find the extension autoBcc and enter the email address you want to BCC on every email.
- Refresh Gmail page
Feel free to add a comment or question below.

Thanks very much for this! It seems to work… :-)

One problem: I want the ability to delete the auto bcc prior to sending each email (i’m bccing them into Saleforce, but not every email is to a customer). If I save it as a draft and then re-open it, the bcc is visible and I can delete it prior to sending. But it’s not visible when I first compose a new email. Solution?

I’ve updated the extension to automatically show the BCC field contents so you can change or remove the email address in the BCC field on individual emails.

I am using this to auto BCC customers and clients into Salesforce. However, the Options dialogue where I type the BCC email address won’t allow enough characters for my Salesforce BCC email address! (Which is ridiculously long at approximatley 65 characters; about 12-15characters longer than I can currently type in). Can this be updated?
Thanks!

Thanks for the tip Justin! v.1.0.4 has been uploaded. The character limit for the BCC email has been removed.

Thank you so much for providing this work around. It is EXACTLY what I needed. You should sell this idea to Salesforce to post on their help forums!
Again, many thanks!

Nice extension, would it be possible to set what email it should work for? In my company we have several emails account we are using , like sales@…order@… So we log into to several accounts at the same time and I would like your script to only be activated for order@…. Thanks in advance

Bernt, Thanks for the comment. I’ll look into adding that in a future version. It would be great to be able to set a separate BCC email for each “from” address you have in Gmail (or no BCC email at all for specific addresses).

I second that! One Bbc for each identity in gmail!!

Terrific, thank you!
Now the address length limitation is gone, is there any chance you could accept the address as “Friendly Name” because sometimes the addresses are a random string and the friendly name helps to remind where it’s BCC’ing to.

Hi great extension and works perfectly thanks! 2 enhancement requests pls:
1. I’d like the ability to indicate an email address for *both* the CC: and BCC: lines. The reason is some people prefer CC while others prefer BCC. You could offer both.
2. I’d like the ability to include *multiple* email addresses for either CC or BCC, just separated by commas or semicolons or whatever (right now your code tests for a “valid” email address and rejects attempts to enter more than 1 address separated by any delimiter)
Thanks again!

We’re beginning work on these features in the coming weeks. Thanks for the comment.

OMG – I’m so HAPPY. I’ve been having a personality conflict with Mozilla Thunderbird for months now – primarily because it had the BCC…. back to Gmail. Yipeeeeeeee!
Any suggestions for a more robust email template set up with in Gmail? Gmail’s “canned responses” leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Aargh! Google have a new Compose editor now. Any chance you could patch this extension to work with it also?
November 5th, 2012 at 6:16 pm
Fortunately I’ve found how to revert to the old Compose editor. Phew! (won’t be long until it’s changed I would imagine)
November 5th, 2012 at 7:31 pm
Mark for now you’ll need to use the old compose. If they go with the new one permanently ( I hope not – I don’t like it!) then we’ll work on getting the extension updated.

How do you disable the showing of the bcc automatically? This is a great extension for monitoring kids emails. Google already lets you setup copies for incoming emails, but this fulfills the sending side. But, if we show the bcc in the composer, they’ll remove it.
Excellent extension. So much better than the gmailAutoBcc where you have to install another extension to make it work and it doesn’t.

HI Eli, unfortunately there’s not a way to remove the BCC field automatically showing. We designed it that way to remind us each email was being BCC’d and to also allow us to remove it easily from specific emails we were writing if we wanted to. But I can see in your situation why you wouldn’t want it to show!

Another vote for the ability to select which email or identity that the BCC will be used with. Without this ability, it is too dangerous that you would forget and accidentally forward emails with sensitive information to a group.
January 5th, 2013 at 8:39 pm
I’ve been using this for 2 months now – still singing YIPEEEEEEEEEEE!!
I would say my only complaint is it is hard to find on line when (searching BCC Gmail) I wanted to tell a friend. I installed it and had no idea how to find it again. LOL I found it!
Suggestion – Bookmark this page so you don’t loose it.
THANKS AGAIN!

It works great with the old gmail composer, but it doesn’t seem to work with the new GUI, wich most of us use…
We would be really happy if it would…
January 10th, 2013 at 5:08 am
I hear you Johan, but the new Compose window would probably take an entire re-write of the extension. So unless Gmail forces everyone to use that at some point (and I pray they don’t – I’m not a fan), we’ll likely not adjust for it.

Hi Tim, This looks like a fantastic extension and is work that is really appreciated. Unfortunately it has invalidated my requested bcc: email address because it has a “+” symbol in the string of text before the “@” sign. Is there an intentional reason for this?
January 30th, 2013 at 7:33 am
Hi James – thanks for the kind words. The programmer must have done it that way thinking it was validating the format of the email. You don’t see many “+” signs in emails! But certainly it shouldn’t be causing a problem. I am having them work on the next version of this and I will include that fix in the next one. I hope to have it out soon.

Auto BCC Gmail Chrome 3.0 has been uploaded for anyone following the comments. You can now BCC a different email address for each “from” account you have in Gmail, plus a few other bug fixes. Bang on it for a while and let me know what you think.

Version 3.0 has been uploaded and the Chrome extension now works with the new Gmail Compose window. Let me know if you see any problems or bugs.

Hey Tim!
Finally! A solution that seems to work consistently. As advertised, it works with the new Gmail Compose window.
It didn’t pick up the addresses from all of my accounts. I accessed the local database on Chrome and added them manually. This worked like a charm.
The code looks compact and clean. Good job!
Many thanks!

Thanks for the comment Syd. Glad it worked for you.

I can’t seem to get this to recognize my google apps email address. Does it not work with google apps?
May 6th, 2013 at 8:05 am
It should work with any email address Allison. You may try closing Chrome after you install it and re-launch the browser.
May 9th, 2013 at 2:38 pm
Love the extension but it conflicts with MightyText extension for txting on Android phone from browser.
Has anyone else reported? Both programs are important so I’d love to help find a fix.
FYI: MightyText is web to Android app that syncs txt messages and you can reply/text from your browser.
After I installed BCC it stopped working???
Thanks
May 9th, 2013 at 2:40 pm
Hi Bob – haven’t heard of any conflicts and I don’t know why it would affect it. There isn’t any connection between the two.
May 17th, 2013 at 6:04 am
Hi Tim,
Great extension, I recently discovered it and I use it daily now.
There is only one annoying thing: when I compose a new email it moves the focus from the “to” field to the “text” field. Would be great to preserve the default gmail focus in a future version.
thank you,
Andrei
May 17th, 2013 at 7:14 am
Hi Andrei – I don’t see that same issue. Is that with the new Compose window or the old one? I’ve tried to replicate this and can’t seem to.
May 19th, 2013 at 11:35 am
Hi Tim – yes, with the new compose. It happens both when starting a new email and when I forward an email. Here is my configuration:
Chrome Version 26.0.1410.65
Mac OS 10.6.8
autoBcc_cr 3.0
